5 Myths about Breast Cancer

In an era where information is at our fingertips, it’s sometimes difficult to distinguish between myths and truths about cancer development. It’s easy to let fears and misconceptions shape our perception. Through this article, we shall examine the five top myths about breast cancer and reveal the scientifically confirmed truths behind them.

Myth 1: An Injury to the Breast Can Cause Cancer

Breast injuries do not cause cancer.
Injuries caused by car accidents or a blow to the body can cause pain, bruising or bleeding, which can lead to blood accumulation in the breast, known as a haematoma.
Additionally, fat necrosis or breast scarring can occur after injury, surgery or biopsy. Generally, these injuries heal on their own over time; however, if you have a mammogram after an injury, additional imaging may be required.
Sometimes, a breast cancer diagnosis that appears after an injury is not from the injury. The injury may have simply brought to light a tumour that had formed previously. However, the injury did not cause the cancer – the cancer was already there. If you have recently experienced a breast injury, inform your doctor before your next mammogram.
It’s also important to discuss with your doctor if you experience breast pain, recent injury, swelling, changes in the skin or around your breast or anything that seems unusual to you.

Myth 2: Deodorant Causes Breast Cancer

The idea that deodorants can cause breast cancer is a very widespread myth, which, however, finds no scientific confirmation.
Experts from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) state that there is no specific evidence linking the use of underarm deodorants with the development of breast cancer.

Myth 3: Breast Pain is a Symptom of Breast Cancer

Curiously, breast pain is usually not a sign of breast cancer. In fact, according to research, only about 1% of women who experience breast pain have cancer. On the other hand, some women who have already been diagnosed with breast cancer report some pain.
According to the American Cancer Society, the most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump in the breast, although most lumps don’t hurt. Other possible symptoms may include swelling, changes in the nipple or skin, discharge, swollen lymph nodes, and, more rarely, pain in the breast or nipple.
It’s important to know that many of these symptoms may also be signs of harmless problems. More specifically, breast pain can occur due to hormonal changes, injuries or fluid retention.
However, if you experience recurring breast pain, it’s good to discuss with your doctor about possible causes and solutions that may exist.

Myth 4: Breast Cancer Can Be Caused by Mammography

Mammography to this day is the best way for early detection of breast cancers. The compression of the breast during a mammogram cannot cause cancer or spread it. In fact, tighter compression during a mammogram leads to clearer images, which are more readable for the radiologist.
According to the American National Cancer Institute, “The benefits of mammography almost always outweigh the possible risk from exposure to very small doses of radiation. The risk of cancer from this exposure is extremely low.”.
As for how often this important examination should be done, according to the Greek Mastology Society, if there is no family history of breast cancer or personal history, the first mammogram is recommended to be done between 35 and 38 years of age. From 40 years and above, breast examination should be done annually.

Myth 5: Only Women Are at Risk of Developing Breast Cancer

Contrary to what most people believe, this year it’s estimated that approximately 2,800 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 530 will lose their lives. Although it is rarer and the risk of getting breast cancer remains low, men should also perform regular checks, conducting breast self-examination during bathing and reporting any changes to their doctors.
Breast cancer in men is usually detected as a hard lump under the nipple and areola area. Men show 25% higher mortality compared to women, mainly because awareness among men is less widespread and they are more likely not to recognise a lump as breast cancer, which can cause delay in treatment.
